Surveys show the most popular suggestion for adding mechanics from other games to TTRPGs is to add elements from Deck building games.
In this optional rule players when they use a focus point they discard a card of their choice from their deck. This can be any card not necessarily the card played.
Their deck is drawn from a pack of one card for each elective fighting/class ability available to that class. For spells casters choose which spell cards to use from spells learned and must discard any card when they cast a spell, or that spell card if they roll a critical miss.
Abilities gain automatically at level one and at a specific numbered level do not grant focus points and cannot be discarded. Keep such cards separately and to the right. Cards to the left represent focus point and can/must be discarded.
Players may also spend a action to discard and redraw one card, or a free discard and redraw at the end of a round.
The number of cards is equal to the focus points of the player. Rather than using a token representing focus points they lose a card from their hand, which goes back to their discard deck.
The players initial cards is in hand is comprised of a mixture of chosen cards and randomly drawn cards, They choose equal to the number of base focus points they have and draw equal to the bonus focus points (see next paragraph)
To compensate for the loss of flexibility from drawing cards rather than choosing abilities all classes except Wizards Psions, Clerics and Druids gain one extra non spell card. Also when players roll a critical success they gain one card from either the abilities deck or spells deck, this gain is temporary and only lasts till a sleep rest.
When a card is discarded it goes into a discard pile for that player. When they recover focus points following a rest they regain cards from this pile.
At the end of the adventuring day they can retain no more than their focus points in ability cards and/or spells available, however they can choose to either retain or return any other card.
Upon levelling players gain abilities they choose which ability cards to add.
The GM may reward temporary extra abilities and spells for that day.
