Why The Old Game is a Flawed Game
Problems with the mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons are well known and latest 2024 ‘edition’ seems to double down on these. It is barely playable at higher levels, slow to resolve combat and poorly balanced between classes. Trying to break the game through overpowered multiclass combos has become more popular than playing the game. Afraid to take anything away from players it insists on remaining ‘compatible’ with a fundamentally broken core system.
An explosion of challengers has rightly emerged as WOTC continues to mistreat fans in the same way that has destroyed many computers game communities milking for every transaction. There has been a yearning for ‘old school’ where combat is more deadly and characters are mortal. Shadowdark has rightly become hugely popular. However many players want to invest in their character and have more options for character customization. Daggerheart, DC20 and Draw Steel have many similarities but so far only are developed for level one and will take years more development. As Xmas approaches and the full set of new edition D&D books delayed until afterwards you cannot buy anywhere a fully fledged modern replacement for the market leader.
